GRAPHERGIA Hub launches our Webinar Series with our first session on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Management, to introduce EU researchers from our partners and other Graphene Flagship projects developing innovative solutions deploying graphene-technologies to the protection of innovation with European patents.
The webinar ‘How to protect an invention in Europe – European Patent’ by Dr. Konstantinos Vavekis, Founder of our partner Euglottia Single Member PC, was hosted today the 30th of January 2025 at 14:00 CET online, sharing information on the concrete strategies and methodologies that can be implemented during a project lifetime, and beyond.
In GRAPHERGIA, we host a webinar series dedicated to three domains:
- Intellectual property rights.
- Technical webinars.
- Scientific sessions.
The aim of our webinar series is to share insights and findings from the GRAPHERGIA project empowering future energy harvesting and storage with graphene. Our next technical webinar dedicated to laser-assisted graphene applied to smart textiles and wearable devices will be in March -we will unveil more details on our LinkedIn, X and BlueSky soon.
The GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinar Series ‘How to protect an invention in Europe – European Patent’
32 researchers and innovators from GRAPHERGIA, GIANCE, 2D-BioPAD, 2D-PRINTABLE, ARMS, INERRANT Batteries, EMPHASIS Supercaps and PolyGraph joined Kostas Vavekis’ presentation to explain what is a patent. During his talk, the European Patent Attorney answered some questions about how to protect inventions with patents and how to use them.
“A patent is the right to exclude others of making, using, selling or importing the patented invention for a limited period of time in a geographic area” – Dr. Konstantinos Vavekis.
He also clarified what can be patented, and spoke about patent requirements depending on countries or European level. In fact, he explained how a patent document looks like and a European patent timeline.
“In most countries, patents are not granted for mere business methods or rules of games, or for methods of treatment, diagnostics and surgery of the human or animal body, or for inventions that are contrary to ordre public or morality, or for plant and animal varieties” – Dr. Konstantinos Vavekis.
He recommended the webinar attendees to:
- Discuss and fix the IPR owners of their key innovations (processes, products, components).
- Conduct an initial patent search in the relevant field and innovation categories -the European Innovation Office platform can support with this.
- Ask for further assistance to the European IP Helpdesk, where Kostas is an ambassador.
The webinar concluded with a questions and answers moment where participants could ask their questions and shared insights with the European Patent Attorney.
