From Athens to Montréal, with a stop in Strasbourg, the GRAPHERGIA partners have traveled all over the world during the month of May 2025 to speak about the GRAPHERGIA project activities and spread our preliminary research results in five events and workshops.
DEFEA 2025 – Defence Exhibition Athens
DEFEA was celebrated from the 6th to the 8th of May 2025 in the Greek capital. Two of our partners, Adamant Composites and Pleione Energy, attended this exhibition with a booth to network with the attendees and introduce two of our demo cases:
- Self-powered structurally integrated sensor for aerospace structures.
- Advanced graphene-based LIB module prototype for space applications.
DEFEA is a high-profile international defence exhibition where international companies present land, naval, aerospace, national and cyber security defence systems.
In the pictures below you can see Chrysanthi Paparouni, Despoina Batsouli, Ioannis Paraskevopoulos, Spyros Tsiotos and Grigorios Koutsoukis from Adamant, together with Zampia Kalogridi from Pleione.
Collaboration Workshop in Athens with SAFARI and 2D-BioPAD
During the 8th and 9th of May 2025, our Graphene Flagship sibling project SAFARI hosted their consortium meeting in the facilities of their partner Creative Nano PC, located in Athens (Greece). SAFARI seeks to expand the range of 2D materials by leveraging graphene research while developing safety and sustainable manufacturing process, and they invited us and 2D-BioPAD to join them in a common activity.
Spyros Yannopoulos and Magda Spella, from our coordinator Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), participated as speakers in a collaboration workshop in which Spyros presented GRAPHERGIA and discussed about the projects’ common topics, such as challenges of SSbD (Safe and Sustainable by Design) approaches on 2D materials production, strategies for exploiting these cutting-edge materials and a look at future perspectives, and how the European industry is positioning itself as a global leader in the 2D materials landscape.
SAFARI focuses on the combination of MXenes and graphene, taking advantage of their unique properties such as thermal stability and electrical conductivity. This combination of materials holds promise for a variety of applications including biosensors, conductive inks and EMI shielding, in line with the graphene leader’s ambition to explore a variety of applications in industry. In GRAPHERGIA, we are always eager to collaborate with them trough these type of joint actions.
Over 40 attendees listened to the projects presentations chaired by Ioanna Deligkiozi from AXIA Innovation GmbH.

Graphene Flagship Digital Workshop: Advancing Sustainability in 2D Materials
On the 15th of May 2025, Matteo Maccanti, Environmental Researcher at our partner Next Technology Tecnotessile, participated as a speaker in the digital workshop organized by Graphene Flagship: “Advancing Sustainability in 2DMaterials”, attended by 87 participants.
Matteo explained how in GRAPHERGIA we are applying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and eco-design methodology for the sustainability of our graphene-based products. Other speakers of the online workshop moderated by Maria Abrahamsson, the Graphene Flagship Director, were:
- Elisabeth Sagström-Bäck, SIO Grafen: “Swedish 2D Sustainability – A Model That Works”.
- Alexander Felix Tiniakos, Creative Nano (SAFARI Project): “A Simple, Fast Fluorine-Free Alternative Process for the Synthesis of Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene”.
- Suiting Ding, University of Southern Denmark (Project ARMS): “ARMS – Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) Approach for Energy Storage Devices”.
247th ECS Meeting – The Electrochemical Society Meeting 2025
From Greece, we traveled to Canada. Apurba Ray, Research Scientist at Institute of Materials Research of DLR (German Aerospace Center), presented the abstract “Polymer Electrolyte Based Flexible Micro-Supercapacitors for Future Aerospace and Smart e-Textile Applications” on the the 20th of May 2025 at 11:40h in the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, as part of the Symposium A01: “New Approaches and Advances in Electrochemical Energy Systems”, during the 247th ECS Meeting – The Electrochemical Society Meeting, celebrated from the 18th to the 22nd of May 2025.
“I feel very lucky to get this golden opportunity to meet, interact and discuss in person with many experts, renowned scientists, researchers, students and audiences from different fields. The innovative research ideas, exchange of knowledge through different presentations, friendly and collaborative behavior of all participants motivate me to progress further in my research work.” – Apurba Ray.
9th Graphene Flagship EU-Korea international workshop on graphene and 2D materials
After Canada, we traveled back to Europe, landing in the French city of Strasbourg on the 26th of May 2025 to participate in another joint workshop with several Graphene Flagship projects: the EU-Korea Workshop 2025.
The event was organized in the context of the consolidated collaboration between the Graphene Flagship and the Korean Graphene Society, and the workshop was co-organized by both institutions. Paolo Samorì, coordinator of the 2D-PRINTABLE project, chaired this workshop, joined by 15 participants coming from ARMS, GIANCE, 2D-PL, 2DNeuralVision, and GRAPHERGIA.
Our coordinator Spyros Yannopoulos from FORTH was a guest speaker, with his talk entitled: “Laser-assisted production of high-quality graphene and graphene-based nanohybrids: Innovative processes in energy storage devices”.
