GRAPHERGIA’s partner the Institute of Materials Research of DLR (German Aerospace Center) presented an abstract at the 9th International Symposium on Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (mESC‑IS 2025), on Wednesday 3 September 2025 at 10:50h in Kocaeli Congress Center, Izmit (Turkey).

This abstract, entitled “Ionic liquid integrated high-voltage polymer gel electrolyte to improve the capacitance and cyclic stability of supercapacitors”, was explained by Dr. Apurba Ray, Research Scientist, who is the co-author of the publication with Professor Bilge Saruhan, both from DLR, one of our German partners. The session was attended by around 30 participants from Europe, the Caucasus, the Middle East, the Mediterranean rim, and Africa, with a few attendees joining from North America, including Mexico.

Introduction to GRAPHERGIA’s Scientific Abstract

With the rapidly increasing demand for the most promising electrical energy storage devices, supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted widespread interest due to their high capacity, specific power density and long cyclic performance. To date, symmetric electrodes made of various types of porous carbons such as activated carbon (AC), carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes (CNT), and graphene/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are commonly used for commercial electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) or supercapacitors. Electrolytes also play an important role for supercapacitor devices through their physical, thermal and electrochemical properties.

mESC-IS 2025: The 9th International Symposium on Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion

International Symposium on Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (mESC-IS) was inaugurated in 2015. The symposium took place in Ankara at METU bringing together experts from hydrogen and fuel cell as well as battery and supercapacitor communities. As a result, an extensive use was made of plenary sessions in this meeting, a tradition that continued thereafter. Initially the symposium was planned for every two years, but this was changed in the Cappadocia meeting. The symposium now takes place every year, odd years in Turkey and even years in one of the participating countries.

mESC-IS series of symposia (as well as the summer schools) are organized with the general guidance of International Steering Committee. Each symposium has its own committees formed in accordance with the tasks undertaken within the particular symposium.
