Join us for the third session of the GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinar Series, co-organised with our colleagues from the POLYGRAPH project, to delve into exciting advances in wearable sensor technologies using laser-induced graphene and MXenes.

Laser-derived graphene and MXenes are rapidly emerging as versatile materials for sensing and actuation applications, ranging from physiological monitoring and gas detection to biosensing and smart electrodes. Laser-assisted graphene deposition on flexible substrates stands out as an ideal candidate for wearable sensors due to its flexibility, conductivity, piezoresistive properties, and adaptability. So far, graphene-based devices have successfully been used to monitor limb movement, breathing patterns, heart rate, speech, and sweat composition

However, a key challenge persists: laser-assisted graphene is typically produced on rigid or flexible, non-biocompatible substrates, which constrains its use in direct skin-contact applications. In this session, we will present a novel approach to overcome this limitation: laser-assisted deposition of graphene on biocompatible, cross-linked polymer substrates. We will also dive into the potential of MXene-based thin film sensors, highlighting their complementary advantages and practical applications.

Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the future of graphene-based wearables and join our webinar!

GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinar Series #3 Speakers

Spyros Yannopoulos – Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) – GRAPHERGIA

Spyros Yannopoulos has been serving as a Research Director at the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) in Greece for over 23 years. Two years ago, he assumed the role of Professor of Physical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Patras while maintaining his position at FORTH as a collaborative faculty member. As an expert in the development and applications of innovative advanced materials, he leads the FORTH team within the GRAPHERGIA project and supervises the research efforts of the entire consortium, which is set to power the future of energy with graphene.

Dr. Marko Spasenović – POLYGRAPH

Principal Research Fellow at the Center for Microelectronic Technologies at the Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy in Belgrade, Serbia, where he is employed since 2018. He graduated from Carleton University (Canada) with a BEng in Engineering Physics in 2005, received his MSc from the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto (Canada) in 2006, and his PhD from the University of Twente and AMOLF institute (the Netherlands) in 2011. He has led a number of national and international research projects.

Dr Spasenović has experience in optics, photonics, plasmonics, graphene and materials science. His main current research interest lies in fabrication, characterization and application of graphene, including liquid-phase exfoliated and laser-induced graphene. Dr Spasenović is also co-founder of Flexisense, a spin-out company that is working on developing real-time respiration sensors for use in sports.

This webinar is co-organised with POLYGRAPH, a research project running for 36 months and funded by Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, PRIZMA, addressing the integration of LIG with biocompatible polymers synthesised in the  lab, to find the optimal host polymer for applications in heartbeat monitoring.

In GRAPHERGIA, we host a webinar series dedicated to three domains: intellectual property rightstechnical webinars and scientific sessions. The aim of our webinar series is to share with you insights and findings from the GRAPHERGIA project empowering future energy harvesting and storage with graphene.
