Have you ever considered the importance of social factors in shaping innovation outcomes?

In GRAPHERGIA, we are developing graphene-enabled, laser-assisted 2D technologies for energy harvesting and storage solutions in smart textiles, next-generation Li-ion batteries for space, and smart sensors for aerospace. The objective is to develop innovative energy solutions that are not only efficient and useful but also economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable.

To support this work, throughout our 3.5-year project, the GRAPHERGIA team is gathering data from stakeholders (e.g., researchers, industry professionals and workers) across the targeted sectors of 2D advanced materials, batteries, e-textiles, and connected sensors.

This enables us to gain a deeper understanding of:

  • Working conditions and employee well-being: including occupational health and safety, training, workload, and the overall quality of working conditions in innovation-related activities.
  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices: including how organisations address worker protection, transparency, responsible management, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Sustainable and ethical value chains: including how social risks and opportunities emerge across supply chains, from raw materials sourcing to manufacturing and application sectors.

The 1st round of data gathering resulted in an initial report, ‘Preliminary Social Assessment’, providing insights into the current state of play regarding key social factors affecting equity in innovation-related occupations. In particular, the importance of early integration of occupational health programmes is underlined. Moreover, data access, interoperability and transparency remain crucial for further assessing the remaining barriers to social equity in innovation-related occupations.

As GRAPHERGIA enters its final research phase, we continue to gather more data for in-depth analysis of the social determinants. This data, analysed in full anonymity and handled in respect of GDPR, will feed our report ‘Final Social Assessment’, which will be one of the key outputs of the project.

Therefore, we invite our community of followers to take part in the online survey on Social Life Cycle Assessment! This will take you only a few minutes, but it will greatly support our research efforts.
