The sixth edition of the GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinar Series explored two areas of energy storage research: high-performance flexible micro-supercapacitors and advanced self-healing battery technologies. Held online on 25 June 2026, the webinar brought together European scientists from the GRAPHERGIA and PHOENIX projects to present innovations aimed at developing safer, more durable and higher-performing energy storage solutions for next-generation electronic devices.

The session, attended by 37 participants, was moderated by Dr Apurba Ray, Research Scientist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), a GRAPHERGIA partner, who introduced the speakers and guided the scientific discussion.

The first keynote presentation, delivered by Dr Rabah Boukherroub (CNRS, Institute of Electronics, Microelectronics and Nanotechnology – IEMN, University of Lille), focused on the development of high-performance fexible micro-supercapacitors with wide working voltage window and good durability. Dr Boukherroub presented advances in electrode materials and device architectures designed to increase energy density while preserving the rapid charging capability, long cycling stability and mechanical flexibility that make micro-supercapacitors useful for wearable electronics.

The second keynote was presented by Dr Kamil Burak Dermenci, Senior Researcher at the Battery Innovation Centre of Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His presentation was titled “Advancing Self-Healing Battery Technologies Through Integrated Sensing and Triggering”, and it demonstrated how the integration of sensing and triggering mechanisms can enable batteries to detect internal degradation and activate repair processes before failures occur. These smart functionalities have the potential to improve battery safety, extend service life and reduce lifecycle costs, supporting Europe’s transition towards more sustainable energy storage systems.

The session concluded with a question-and-answer discussion, during which attendees exchanged ideas with the speakers on commercialisation challenges and opportunities for collaboration.
