In GRAPHERGIA cutting-edge research meets real-world innovation in graphene and nanomaterials for next-generation Li-ion batteries, smart sensors, and smart textiles.

Tomorrow, Seoung-Ki Lee, Professor at Pusan National University (South Korea) will join our coordinator Spyros Yannopoulos, Research Director at Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (FORTH/ICE-HT), to present an innovative laser-induced photothermal approach for the selective synthesis and functionalisation of nanomaterials. His work demonstrates how precise control of laser irradiation can activate localised regions within a substrate, enabling targeted material growth and integration.

This webinar, which will start at 11:00 CEST on Friday 17 April 2026, will also be an opportunity to learn more about GRAPHERGIA’s progress in developing a novel laser Roll-to-Roll pilot line.

Together, we will explore how advanced laser-based methods are transforming the integration of graphene and functional nanomaterials into flexible substrates and next-generation electronic devices, targeting smart textile applications.

The GRAPHERGIA Podcast Series ‘The Human Side of Graphene’

Does graphene have a “human side”?

In February 2026, we launched the GRAPHERGIA Podcast Series ‘The Human Side of Graphene’, aiming to disseminate the impact and benefits of the Graphene Flagship projects’ research on graphene and 2D materials for our society.

So far, we have published two episodes, that you can watch on YouTube, produced by the Graphene Flagship and co-organised with GRAPHERGIA.

Smart Materials, Smarter Medicine: Graphene Biosensors in Healthcare

In our first podcast you can learn how graphene biosensors applications can improve modern healthcare, tackling issues from Alzheimer’s Disease, depression, health monitoring and more.

The conversation is hosted by Amaia Zurutuza, Scientific Director at Graphenea, joined by Spyros Tsiotos, Materials & Processes Engineer at Adamant Composites (GRAPHERGIA); Alexey Tarasov, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Hochschule Kaiserslautern (MUNASET), and Vincent Bouchiat, CEO & Co-Founder at Grapheal (2D-BioPAD).

Charging the Future: How Graphene Fuels Sustainability

In this episode, you can listen to European researchers share their insights into pioneering innovations at the cutting edge of sustainable energy, making use of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials to develop the next-generation Li-ion batteries.

The podcast guided by Maria Abrahamsson, Director at Graphene Flagship, joined by Athanasios Masouras, Chief Operations Officer at Pleione Energy (GRAPHERGIA); Hamed Pourkheirollah, Post-Doc Researcher and Project Manager at Tampere University (ARMS), and Jinhua Sun, Associate Professor at Chalmers University of Technology (ARMS).

GRAPHERGIA’s Demo Cases: Piloting Graphene-Based Energy Solutions

February 2026 saw the launch of our podcast series, created to make science more accessible to the wider public; and March 2026 marked the official piloting phase of our three demonstration cases implementing graphene-based technologies for energy harvesting and storage in real-life applications.

The demonstrators’ development began last month to validate cutting-edge solutions in smart self-charging textiles and next-generation lithium-ion batteries for applications in healthcare, aerospace, mobility, and wearable electronics:

  1. ‘All-in-one self-charging textile capable of energy harvesting and storage’ is led by BORN GmbH – your knitting engineers.
  2. ‘Self-powered structurally integrated sensor for aerospace structures’ is guided by Adamant Composites.
  3. ‘Advanced graphene-based LIB module prototype for space applications’ is coordinated by Pleione Energy.

“The launch of our three demonstrators marks a crucial step for GRAPHERGIA as it moves forward with system-level validation, generating key performance data to confirm readiness for integration into textile, aerospace, and space grade energy applications”, explains Despoina Batsouli, Head of Advanced Materials Division at Adamant Composites, the GRAPHERGIA partner leading and coordinating the demo cases.

Prior to the launch of our demo cases piloting phase, our partners met in Sapienza Università di Roma, in our fourth General Assembly organised by Tullio Scopigno, Full Professor in the Physics Department, with the objective to advance the deployment and methodologies for our three demonstration cases, with a consistent focus on eco-design principles.

Inside the GRAPHERGIA Lab: Interviews with our Early-Career Researchers

Early-career researchers are central to the GRAPHERGIA project, bringing fresh perspectives and driving innovation in the use of graphene for sustainable energy solutions. The following interviews highlight their contributions, insights, and academic journeys. Meet:

The GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinars

We opened this newsletter inviting you to our upcoming webinar tomorrow. The session is part of the GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinar Series, dedicated to three domains: intellectual property rights, technical webinars and scientific sessions.

Our aim is to share insights and findings from GRAPHERGIA, empowering future energy harvesting and storage with graphene. In fact, we organised two sessions that you can watch below:

  • “Laser-Induced Graphene and MXenes on Cross-Linked Polymer Substrates for Wearable Devices”, co-organised with the Project Polygraph, and starring Professor Spyros Yannopoulos, the GRAPHERGIA Coordinator, and Dr. Marko Spasenović, the POLYGRAPH Coordinator – Watch it here.
  • “How to Handle Intellectual Property Licensing in Research Projects”, led by Dr. Konstantinos Vavekis, European Patent Attorney, Lead IPR Manager of GRAPHERGIA and Founder of our partner Euglottia IP Legal and Financial ServicesWatch it here.

Spreading the word about GRAPHERGIA’s Research: Our Events Participation

Besides organising our own webinars, we go beyond disseminating our research results within the graphene and 2D materials community participating in European and international events.

During the past few months, we took part in the Tribo-Energy & Sensing 2026 (TE&S’26) conference in Stockholm (Sweden), in the Frontiers in Batteries and Electrochemistry webinar “Supercapacitors and Hybrid Electrochemical Cells: Advanced Materials, Architectures, and Emerging Applications”, and in the Patras IQ 2026 Innovation & Technology Exhibition.

The GrapheneEU Community: Collaboration is Key

One of our mottos since the start of GRAPHERGIA has been that collaboration is key. With this always in mind, we regularly join forces with other initiatives and projects that are also helping to shape a more sustainable future for Europe.

In January 2026, we published a collaborative article with PHOENIX Smart Batteries, a European research and innovation project launched in May 2023 supporting the development of smart, technologically advanced and sustainable batteries by embedding sensors and self-healing functionalities that is part of a bigger initiative, BATTERY 2030+.

Read our article “Next-Generation Sustainable Batteries: Insights from the GRAPHERGIA and PHOENIX Projects”.

But we go beyond in terms of collaboration, and we formed an Advisory Group that is playing a key role in guiding GRAPHERGIA’s innovation journey to develop sustainable energy solutions, bringing together external advice. Four experts help us to ensure that our research and technologies remain aligned with real-world needs, strengthening both their impact and their potential for industrial uptake.

Have a look at this blog post to meet the members of our Advisory Group.

This collaborative approach underlines GRAPHERGIA’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge science while keeping real-life applications in e-textiles for wellness monitoring, smart sensors for aerospace, and Li-ion batteries for spatial applications at its core.

Travelling the new seas of innovation is always better when one is well accompanied!
